This CD, one of three in this particular range, features one of the most influential jazz singers of the 20th century - Ella Fitzgerald. Gifted with a three-octave voice, Ella became noted for her tonal purity, virtually faultless phrasing and intonation and her improvisational scat singing.
Whilst the notion of taking classic American songs and producing a songbook has become very much in vogue over the last five or so years, it was Ella Fitzgerald who popularised the idea, beginning in 1956 with her album of Cole Porter songs. She would later bring the Midas touch to similar albums of material by Rodgers & Hart, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer. Indeed, songwriters and composers were queuing up to have their songs interpreted!
