But for a serious accident, Maurice Chevalier might have been lost to the world of music – he began his working life as an acrobat until an accident brought that to a halt, culminating in him pursuing a new career as a singer and actor and becoming a success in France. The outbreak of the First World War saw him enlist in the French infantry where he was wounded and captured by the Germans and placed in a POW camp, although he used the two years he was imprisoned to learn English from his fellow prisoners. At the end of the war he returned to the French film industry to continue his career, but the launch of ‘talkies’ in America saw Maurice head to Hollywood in 1928. He proved an immediate hit thanks to The Love Parade with Jeanette MacDonald. His heavy French accent, melodic voice and undoubted charm made him one of the most successful actors in Hollwood for the next twenty or so years, living up to his own motto of ‘Love the public the way you love your mother.’
