At the turn of 1953 American singer Patti Page enjoyed a number one hit in her homeland with the novelty item How Much Is That Doggie, spending eight weeks on top of the Billboard charts. Whilst her UK record company readied the single for release over here, Ted Heath vocalist Lita Roza recorded a cover version, which was subsequently rush released by Decca.
The two versions went head to head - Patti Page made the top ten, peaking at number nine with her original, but Lita's version, her first UK hit, sailed all the way to the top, spending a week at the summit. Whilst Patti Page never appeared on the UK charts again, Lita made two further appearances over the next three years, a paltry return for an exquisite singer. She was voted Top British Female Singer by the readers of NME consecutively from 1951 to 1955 and also topped the Melody Maker listing in 1951 and 1952. This twenty track compilation pays tribute to her undoubted talents.
