After service in the First World War Arthur Askey went into the entertainment business, working the music halls around the country but without making much of an impact. He was eventually drafted in to join the BBC radio show Band Waggon, one of the first situation comedy programmes, although it originally began life as something of a variety show. The show grew in popularity from 1938 onwards, mainly because Arthur and his writing partner Richard Murdoch became responsible for much of the writing.
It was the use of catchphrases such as 'Hello playmates' and 'I thank you' that made Arthur a household name, with Arthur being able to translate this success after the Second World War into films and recordings. His best known song is, of course, The Bee Song, but there were plenty of other musical interludes that Arthur made just as memorable.
