Something of a child prodigy on the clarinet, Benny Goodman joined his first band at the age of 16 and struck out as a session musician at the age of twenty. He formed his own band in 1934 and the following year ushered in the start of the swing era with a performance at the Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles. Over the next forty years he became an integral part of the jazz scene and one of the most accomplished clarinet players of all time (he practised every single day, including the day he died, which occurred on 20/6/1986). These historical recordings, originally part of a double CD, highlight both his own playing abilities and his undoubted talents as a band leader.
